If your house is anything like mine, fall takes off like a sprint and quickly turns into a tornado of activities: schedules, sports, lots and lots of football, holidays, birthday parties, and travel. We can quickly allow life to pull and whip us around like a rag doll and become experts at burning the candle from both ends. Can anyone else relate to this?
I know there are many that relate as we have the privilege of seeing and serving as the Dallas chiropractor for most of you and your families. When life takes off and we are at the mercy of our crazy schedules, our health and the health of our kiddos can quickly be challenged.
Now any good coach would tell you that the fundamentals are foundational. In order to be great you must OWN the basics. So, to help equip and guard you against all the “crud”, here are the four basic, but important, IMMUNE HACKS to adopt in you and your family’s life:
REST: I’m not talking “I feel fine” rest… whatever that means. You need adequate sleep to function optimally. PERIOD. There is no side-stepping around this y’all. The hard truth is your immune system cannot function properly without rest/sleep. Just like you, it will be sluggish and the firefighters of your immune system will either not hear the alarm to get up and attack or will be seriously late to the fight. So start making rest a priority. Make sure the kids have set bedtimes and stick to them. They need them more than ever with all the over-scheduling most of them are enduring.
HYDRATE: Not just with “fluids”, but with good ol’ H20! Yep! This isn’t ground-breaking information, folks. Your body is comprised of 80% water, so it’s a no-brainer that you need it to function and more of it to function optimally. Give your kids water, not slurpees and especially not lots of dairy. Why? Dairy is a mucus producer. It’s a guaranteed way to see more drainage and congestion. If you don’t want more of that in your house, trade the milk for water.
HIGH GRADE FUEL: Since half of the immune system is located in the gut, it is pretty important to choose what you give it. When in the frenzy of stress, it’s harder to make good decisions when eating on-the-go. Too many times most families will hit their own version of the “easy button” when it comes to meals and will miss lots of opportunities to meet adequate amounts of the nutrients the body needs in order to maintain neutral much less function at a high level. You want to focus more on the nourishment that comes from food versus just noshing. Your children need more attention to be put towards what goes in their mouths than anything since they are growing and developing. The best way to do this is to meal plan. Have some healthy go-tos in your kitchen and blend up some yummy, high-nutrient smoothies to get their nutrients in the morning. This is a game-changer and will help equip their immune systems for fighting off the bad guys!
